US News & World Report graduate school rankings place the CMPS departments of Computer Science, Physics and Mathematics at the top of east coast public universities.

The University of Maryland, College Park is in the top 20 institutions nationwide in Mathematics, Computer Science, Physics, Astronomy, and Oceanography.

All of the departments and programs in the College of Computer, Mathematical and Physical Sciences have been recognized for their excellence in many national rankings. Here is some of the latest evidence.

  • Astronomy
    • The Department was ranked 19th by the National Research Council in 1994, the last available NRC survey.
  • Atmospheric & Oceanic Science
    • The Department was ranked 5th in Ph.D. granting institutions in the US by the Gorman Report
    • The Institute for Scientific Information (ISI) ranked the Department 20th in citations for papers on Air pollution and air quality and 17th in citations for papers on Tropical Storms. These are rankings of all institutions world-wide.
  • Chemical Physics
    • The Program was ranked third among degree granting programs in Chemical Physics based on the average number of citations per publication. The period covered was 1999 to 2003. The ranking was done by the Research Services Group of Thomson Scientific.
  • Computer Science
    • The US News & World Report 2006 ranked the Department 13th, and 6th among public universities; and the following specific research areas were ranked:
    • Artificial intelligence—9th
    • Computer systems—16th
    • Programming languages—15th
    • Theory of computing—22nd
  • Geology
    • The Department is ranked 8th among all US universities in geosciences, 11th in the world
    • Geochemistry is ranked 10th nationally, 3rd among public universities.
  • Mathematics
    • The US News & World Report 2006 ranked the Department 20th among all US universities
    • Applied Mathematics—12th
    • Geometry—15th
    • Analysis—18th
  • Physics
    • The US News & World Report 2006 ranked the Department 15th, and 4th among public universities; and the following specific research areas were ranked:
    • Atomic, Molecular & Optical Physics (AMO)—10th
    • Condensed Matter—12th
    • Cosmology/Relativity/Gravity—12th
    • Elementary Particles/Fields/String Theory—Tie for 18th
    • Nuclear—12th
    • Plasma—5th
    • Quantum—10th
    • In the 2003 USN&WR rankings, Chaos & non-Linear Dynamics was ranked first in the nation and the Department was ranked 13th. In the 2005 USN&WR rankings, the Department was 18th in the nation.
