From Research Doctorate Programs in the United States, a 1995 report of the National Research Council: The University of Maryland, College Park is in the top 20 institutions nationwide in Mathematics, Computer Science, Physics, Astronomy, and Oceanography.       The University of Maryland was honored in early 2000 by the Quality Education for Minorities Network as a national leader in awarding doctoral degrees in mathematics, computer science, the physical sciences and engineering.

Faculty Awards The 1997 book, The Rise of American Research Universities: Elites and Challengers in the Postwar Era, placed Maryland 18th nationally in faculty research productivity.
