Before you start, make sure both your Chrome store account and your Gmail account are the same.
Download PrivateMail using the link from the home page or through the Chrome plugin store.
Log into Chrome with your preferred Google account.
Accept the permissions PrivateMail needs to secure your email.
If the setup page does not open automatically, click the PrivateMail icon () in the upper right and enter the setup page.
Enter your name.
Hit the Suggest Password button to generate a password or enter your own long password. You must remember this password or store it in a secure place to use PrivateMail!
Click the confirmation button to complete setup.
If you have Gmail open in another tab, you will need to refresh the page for PrivateMail to take effect.
Encrypt an Email
Navigate to Gmail in Chrome and sign in.
Compose an email including at least a recipient and message body.
Click the Encrypt button. If prompted, enter your PrivateMail password. If you have this PrivateMail contact already, your email body will be encrypted and replaced in the compose window.
Now you can send your email that has been secured using OpenPGP.js and signed to prevent tampering during transit.
Decrypt an Email
Navigate to Gmail in Chrome and sign in.
Open an email encrypted with PGP. This looks like "-----BEGIN PGP MESSAGE----- ..... ---END PGP MESSAGE-----".
If your message is not decrypted automatically, click the decrypt button to enter your password which will allow you to decipher the message. This also verifies the sender's signature to make sure the message was not altered during transit. Note the message remains PGP encrypted on Google's servers.
Invite a Friend to use PrivateMail
Navigate to Gmail in Chrome and sign in.
If you click the Encrypt button when composing an email and you don't have the recipient as a PrivateMail contact, follow the steps below.
Click the confirmation button which generates and sends the recipient an invitation email that includes your own PrivateMail contact information. They will have your PrivateMail public key, so they will be able to send you encrypted emails.
If the recipient already has PrivateMail, their contact information will be sent back and added to your contacts automatically the next time they use Gmail. If they haven't joined yet, they can follow the steps in the email to join PrivateMail. Once they do, you will get their contact information, and you can start communicated using PGP encryption.
