What is ACM?
We serve the student community at the University of Maryland, College Park by holding academic, social, and corporate recruiting events such as seminars, professor information sessions, video game tournaments, resumé workshops, and talks.
We are a student chapter of the Association for Computing Machinery. Our purpose is to promote increased knowledge of and greater interest in the science, design, development, construction, languages, management, and applications of modern computing; and to foster communication between persons having an interest in computing and its applications.
Founded in 1947, ACM is a major force in advancing the skills of information technology professionals and students worldwide. Today, 80,000 members and the public turn to ACM for the industry's leading Portal to Computing Literature, authoritative publications and pioneering conferences, providing leadership for the 21st century.
Who can be a member?
Meetings and events are open to any student or faculty member who wishes to attend. Though most of our members are undergraduate Computer Science or Computer Engineering majors, every member of the UMCP community is welcome.
All members are encouraged, but not required, to join the International ACM organization here. An ACM Student Membership will help you with your research, papers, discussion, thesis and schoolwork with a wealth of IT and computing resources including the ACM Portal which contains 750,000 pages of text; can help you choose your career direction, succeed in school, and find the job of your dreams; provides you access to the Career Resource Center which contains job postings, information on industry trends and community forums; puts you in touch with a vast network of over 75,000 IT professionals and students through online member forums and Special Interest Groups; and will help you stay up-to-date with the latest news and information in the field.
When do you meet?
Our regular meetings are held most Thursdays at 5:30 PM, in CSIC 1121. We do have some special events on other days, so be sure to check this site regularly.
Do you have a mailing list?
Yes! Join our mailing list to receive meeting reminders, job announcements, and other news. Your privacy is very important, and we will not share our list beyond the CS student groups. We don't like spam any more than you do!
How can I help?
Active participation in ACM simply requires that you attend our meetings and events. If you'd like to volunteer to help out at an event or if you are interested in becoming an officer or serving on a committee, drop us a line. Remember, club leadership looks great on a resume!
What's the difference between ACM and ACM-W and what is UMLUG?
ACM and ACM-W are separate groups with similar missions but slightly different focus. Both groups offer academic, social, and corporate events. The ACM is a general interest group with events geared toward all Computer Science and Computer Engineering students.
The Maryland Student Association for Women in Computing is a chapter of the ACM Committee on Women. The AWC works to encourage and support women in the field of Computer Science. Learn more here.
The UM Linux Users Group is a group of Linux/BSD and other Unix-like OS users at the University of Maryland, College Park. Their events promote awareness and knowledge of Linux and free software. Learn more here.
All three student groups' events are open to all students, CS or CE, male or female; anyone with an interest in computing. We encourage you to take advantage of the wide variety of events offered at UMD. You can find information about Engineering student groups here and CMPS Diversity Programs here.
